I have always been fascinated by the way that technology can make processes more efficient.
That has been a focus of mine, but getting people to embrace digital transformation is extremely hard. In some instances it is damn near impossible.
Why do people not want to do things better? Why do people think sending sheets of paper around to get signed is better? Why do people think that implementing new technology means they will lose their jobs? So many questions...
This article hits my exact points about the pros and cons of digital transformation: Digital Transformation Pros & Cons: What You Need To Do To Win (digital-adoption.com)
Pros:
1. MAKES YOUR BUSINESS MORE COMPETITIVE
2. MAKES YOUR EMPLOYEES MORE PRODUCTIVE
3. ALLOWS YOU TO PROVIDE A BETTER CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
Cons:
1. NEVER-ENDING CHANGE
2. EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES TAKES TIME
3. CAN CAUSE UPHEAVAL & UNCERTAINTY FOR EMPLOYEES
There has to be a balance where companies can evolve without so much internal push back.
If you are struggling with this concept in your company, here are a few suggestions:
1. Engage People From The Beginning
2. Align On Objectives And Establish Clear Goals
3. Think Business-First
4. Synchronize Efforts
5. Make It Easy For Customers And Partners
In my opinion, we can be as flexible as we want to be. Take a look at this list of things that technology has replaced:
Polaroid cameras
Typewriters
VHS Cassette -> DVDs -> Netflix
Portable CD Player/ Walkman -> iPods
Maps -> GPS systems
Landline “plain old telephone service”
Dial-up connection -> Wi-Fi
Can you name some more?
I just think people lean more towards the no because it let's them keep doing what we have been doing.
I happen to like trying new things. That was probably my blessing and my curse in that CIO role. Sometimes I just have to be ok with leaving things as they are. I try to focus on doing what I can, that's it.
Since I have your attention, what do you think is next in tech? What do you see as the next thing to be replaced by technology.
I honestly was hoping for more of a Jetson experience by now. There are a lot of Flintstone practices still active.

I guess we will just have to wait to see what's next...
